While Honda may not be the first name that comes to mind when you think of Hybrid of Electric cars, it should, as the brand offers four models in the hybrid and all-electric categories. So not only can you drive green technology as well as save on fuel, but you know your car will feature the reliability and quality for which Honda has long been known.
Honda Hybrid Cars
Honda offers three distinct Hybrid cars. Hybrids come in two flavors: the traditional Hybrid where a small gasoline engine drive a generator that charges the batteries, drives the electric motor, or both. The batteries then power an electric motor that drives the wheels. A standard Hybrid can be driven a short distance on electric-only, depending upon the state of charge of the batteries when the car was parked.
The stunning new Honda Accord Hybrid is powered by the third generation of Honda's two-motor hybrid technology. There’s a highly-efficient 2.0 L 16-valve DOHC Atkinson cycle engine which is paired with two electric motors. A benefit of the Accord two-motor system is that it operates without the need for a conventional automatic transmission. Additionally, a new, more compact intelligent power unit (IPU), containing the hybrid battery pack and its control systems, is now mounted under the rear floor instead of in the trunk, preserving both cargo space and the flexibility of a 60/40-split and folding rear seat, standard on all Hybrid models and trims.
The Honda Insight sedan joins Honda's growing family of electrified vehicles this year as an all-new, dedicated hybrid sedan, positioned as a premium compact sedan between the Civic and Accord. Also powering the 2019 Honda Insight is the third generation of Honda's two-motor hybrid system, but with a smaller, highly efficient 1.5 L Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine, powerful electric drive motors, and 60-cell lithium ion battery pack. Combined, the 1.5 L engine and electric motor provide for a system output of 151 horsepower and 197 lb-ft of torque. The Insight Hybrid offers appealing exterior styling wrapped around a refined five-seat interior with class-leading interior space, premium appointments and the latest safety and entertainment technologies.
Honda Plug-in Hybrid Cars
Plug-in Hybrids allow owners to charge their cars at home or at public charging stations also that they can operate for greater distances on electric-only power. The advantage of a Plug-in Hybrid over a pure Electric car is that it’s not range limited, i.e., you can continue to drive using the small gasoline engine to charge the batteries after the initial charge has been depleted.
Like the other members of the Clarity Series, the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid sedan delivers a highly refined, advanced-technology driving experience. The Hybrid powertrain is the same as in the Clarity Hybrid, except that the Plug-in Hybrid features a larger 17-kilowatt hour (kWh), 168-cell lithium-ion battery pack, which gives it a 47-mile all-electric range rating,* the highest of any plug-in hybrid sedan. The Clarity Plug-In Hybrid enables comparatively inexpensive zero-emissions all-electric driving for most daily driving situations. Occasional, or even frequent long-distance travel is also possible with the hybrid powertrain, which helped the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid receive a 340-mile combined gas-electric EPA range rating.* And like the Clarity Hybrid, the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid comes well equipped with a long list of standard convenience, connected-car, safety and driver-assistive technologies.
