2019 Honda Pilot Review

2019 Pilot

As this is the fourth model year of the current third-generation of the Honda Pilot, it's about time for a mid-cycle refresh to keep this impressive SUV at the top of its game. The 2019 Honda Pilot gets refreshed both inside and on the outside, so let's take a closer look at what's going on.

Styling

Without going too far over the top, Honda has done a really impressive job of updating the exterior of the Pilot without having to go as far as a full redesign. While some manufacturers are toning their styling down a little at the moment, Honda is taking a bolder approach with an enhanced look that's actually more aggressive than the 2018 model. Most of the aggression comes from a new front bumper with available LED lights, an updated grille, and bigger openings around the fog lights.

The interior has also been modestly restyled with a new instrument cluster that looks to have been borrowed from the latest Civic. There's also a physical volume knob for the infotainment system that will delight those of us who are not enamored with every function having to be accessed via a touchscreen, or the touch-sensitive volume buttons the Pilot had when this generation was first launched.

Engine and Performance

Honda has chosen to stick with the existing powerplant under the hood of the Pilot, which is therefore still a 3.5-liter V-6 capable of producing 280 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft. of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard with LX, EX and EX-L trim levels, but the higher specification Touring and Elite trims get a more refined version of Honda's nine-speed auto.

Safety and Driver Assistance Features

Honda is renowned for being a safe vehicle and this latest Pilot isn’t going to be doing anything to dispel that particular stereotype anytime soon. When it comes to safety features, every model comes standard with the Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies. The suite includes: Collision Mitigation Braking System with Forward Collision Warning, Road Departure Mitigation, Lane Keeping Assist System, and Adaptive Cruise Control. Other driver-assistive features include automatic high beams and a Multi-Angle Rearview Camera, which are now both standard at all trim levels.

Entertainment and Convenience Features

A lot of the very latest tech is now standard or available with the Pilot. It includes a hands-free power liftgate, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, a larger rear entertainment system with Blu-ray player, the CabinTalk in-car PA system from the Odyssey minivan, and a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability and over-the-air updates.

2019 Honda Pilot Price

The Pilot range starts with the front-wheel drive LX, which has a starting MSRP* from $31,450 and has fuel economy ratings as good as 19 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg combined**. At the opposite end of the pricing spectrum is the all-wheel drive Pilot Elite, and this one costs from $49,015 including destination. In between there are a further 11 different models, so there really is a Honda Pilot for just about every buyer.
